What is a domain name? |
|
|
A website's domain name is often thought of as its "Internet address." In fact, a site's domain name is a mnemonic used to easily remember a website's location. Without getting into all of the gory, technical details, every website is assigned a unique IP address, a series of numbers that is, in fact, the website's unique Internet Address. An example of such an IP address is 207.96.5.2. Most websites also have a domain name, a string of the form sightspecific.com, that is mapped to this IP address. Whenever a request is made to access the site sightspecific.com, the request is actually translated into a request for the site 207.96.5.2. Life is made much simpler in that it is infinitely easier to remember a site's domain name, then it is to remember its IP address. All SightSpecific hosted websites are allocated a unique IP address. Should the client desire it, and most do, SightSpecific can aid you in finding an available domain name to map to your IP address. SightSpecific offers this option at no additional cost to the client, however, InterNIC, a third-party responsible for assignment of Internet Domain Names, requires a $70 registration fee per domain name. This cost reflects their fee of $35 per year per domain name. |
